Retroviruses and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

In 1980, the first human retrovirus, human T-cell lympho tropic virus type I (HTLV-I) was
discovered in a patient initially diagnosed as having cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL).
Subsequently, HTLV-I was demonstrated to be the etiologic agent for an endemic T-cell
cancer, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), that shares some clinical features with CTCL.
In retrospect, that index case has been reclassified as ATL; however, the search for a role of
a retrovirus in the development and progression of CTCL has been vigorously pursued and …
