and DNA but not by single-stranded RNA (13). Transfer RNA, which has been shown to bind
ethidium bromide (14), stimulates the reaction (15). Perhaps the strong inhibition by ethidium
bromide indicates that transcription of the RNA of these viruses must involve double-stranded
regions. There is now evidence that ethidium bromide inhibits the growth of tumors in mice
